Stylistic Explorations was a Master’s-level research project where I delved into the unique movement styles of three influential choreographers—Twyla Tharp, Jerry Mitchell, and Sean Bankhead. Drawing on key texts including Brennan’s Every Little Movement Has a Meaning All Its Own, Sally Doughty’s “I Notice that I’m Noticing,” and Smith-Autard’s Dance Composition, I combined academic inquiry with creative experimentation. Inspired by Merce Cunningham’s Chance Theory, I created a bank of 16 original movements, which I randomized into sequences to serve as a “blank slate.” Onto this neutral base, I layered and embodied each choreographer’s distinct style. The project culminated in a 30-minute hybrid lecture-performance that blended critical analysis with live demonstration.
